Metabolic syndrome

Starts with an imbalance in glucose uptake by cells = body cells do not take enough glucose out of blood.

Not because of lack of insulin, but because of insulin resistance at the level of insulin receptors. At first, more secretion of insulin by pancreas (hyperinsulinaemia) trying to normalize blood sugar levels.

Metabolic syndrome (Syndrome X) = precursor to Type 2 Diabetes:

• Decreased response to glucose and increased insulin resistance 
• Hyperinsulinaemia, obesity 
• High blood pressure, high cholesterol / triglyceride levels. 

After a while:
Depletion of pancreas > Insulin level decreases > Blood sugar level increases >
Type 2 Diabetes.
