Most people with diabetes have a normal sex life, but sometimes, diabetes can cause problems in this area. Problems that can occur are described here:
Problems in women
Women with diabetes can suffer with menstrual disorders. In particular, irregular cycles , especially in women who are overweight and with poorly controlled blood glucose. It is not uncommon for women with diabetes to need more insulin around menstruation.
Problems in men
All men may suffer from erection problems, but this is more common in men with diabetes, especially if they have had diabetes for a long period of time. There are many reasons. It may be due to performance anxiety, or due to complications of diabetes, when damage to blood vessels and nerves can occur. A solution is not easy but one can take dilating blood injections or medication for impotence.
In women, they often do not lubricate sufficiently during sex. Proper regulation of blood glucose can resolve this issue quickly. It is also true that with prolonged high blood sugar levels, fungi and bacteria are more likely to cause an infection. If the urine contains high levels of sugar, bacterial infections are more likely to occur. Infection of the penis or vagina may also cause problems with sex.
After sexual intercourse, one’s blood suger levels can decrease. To prevent this, have something to eat beforehand or at least make sure you have some glucose at your fingertips.
