Makes life easier for diabetics

Diabetes and Travelling

Having diabetes is no problem if you go on holiday, but there are a few things you should pay attention to.

Lifestyle
On vacation, you often have a different routine: you may sleep for longer or laze on the beach or you may even choose to have an active holiday. In addition, you will probably have irregular meal times, unfamiliar food, a very different climate or a time difference. All these factors can affect your blood sugar levels. Therefore, it is wise to go prepared or else, get in touch with your doctor or dietician beforehand to discuss how best to handle your diabetic needs on your vacation.

Nutrition
Actually, on holiday you have the same nutritional requirements as at home. Therefore, choose healthy foods, be moderate in fat, salt and sugar intake and eat regularly. Try to avoid eating more than normal. Always have a sandwich, biscuit or glucose with you. Drink sufficient water, especially during air travel and when in hot climates (at least 2 litres per day). In some countries, bottled mineral water may be a safer option.
